In brief: Tourism to Cuba slumps in 2021

*Cuba’s national statistics institute (ONEI) has released new figures which show that the number of tourists visiting Cuba totalled 573,944 in 2021, just 39.8% of the total registered in the same period of 2020. The decline reflects the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic which, along with longstanding US economic sanctions, has had a damaging impact on the Cuban economy, causing it to shrink 11% in 2020 and grow just 0.5% in 2021 on the latest (January 2022) forecast from the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America & the Caribbean (Eclac).
