MEXICO: Towards nationalised lithium production?

This week Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador once again outlined intentions to nationalise lithium production. López Obrador has long expressed interest in bringing lithium production under state control and seeks to do so in his proposed energy sector reform, which is currently being debated in congress. His recent comments were prompted by the takeover of Bacanora Lithium, an Anglo-Canadian company that owns lithium mining concessions in Mexico, by Ganfeng, a leading Chinese battery manufacturer.
