In brief: US suspends avocado imports from Mexico’s Michoacán
*Mexico’s agriculture and rural development ministry (Sader) has announced that the US animal and plant health inspection service (Aphis) has suspended avocado imports from Michoacán – Mexico’s main avocado-producing state – until further notice, citing security grounds. The decision was taken after an Aphis official received a threatening phone call while carrying out inspection work in Uruapan city, Michoacán. Aphis is carrying out an investigation to evaluate the threat to its staff in Michoacán. According to Sader, producers in Michoacán have exported more than 135,000 tonnes (t) of avocado to the US in the past six weeks. Last year Mexican producers exported 1.36m t of avocados which translated into sales of over US$3.46bn. The US is the main consumer of Mexican avocados, followed by Canada, Japan, Spain, and the Netherlands. In the same statement, Sader said the state of Jalisco will begin exporting avocados to the US before the end of 2022, after signing an operational work plan with the US on 7 December.
