In brief: Mexico’s CFE awards contract to Spanish-German consortium

*Mexico’s state-run electricity firm Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) has awarded a new contract for the development of two new natural gas combined cycle plants to the consortium formed by the Spanish engineering companies Técnicas Reunidas and TSK, which will design, construct and commission the plants, and the German energy company Siemens Energy, which will provide the turbine technology. The combined cycle plants, located in San Luis Rio Colorado city (Sonora state) and González Ortega municipality (Zacatecas state), will have a capacity of 600 megawatts (mw) each and will use high-efficiency gas turbines. Técnicas Reunidas states that the project will last 38 months and that its part of the contract is worth US$337m. The announcement regarding the contract comes days after Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador criticised Spanish firms operating in Mexico, suggesting he wanted a “pause” in commercial relations.
