In brief: Uruguay posts higher than expected growth in 2021

*Uruguay’s economy & finance minister Azucena Arbeleche has said that the government estimates that Uruguay’s GDP grew 4.5% in 2021, above its earlier estimate of 3.5%. She said that the final figure for 2021 growth would be officially published on 23 March by Uruguay’s central bank. She also said that in the third quarter of 2021, economic activity returned to levels registered before the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic struck in March 2020 and that in 2021 80% of jobs lost in 2020 had been recovered, with some 48,500 people returning to the job market.
