In brief: Argentina’s inflation continues to surge

* Argentina’s national statistics institute (Indec) has published the latest consumer price index (IPC), showing that monthly inflation reached 3.9% in January, driving up the annual rate to 50.7%. This is the highest monthly rise since April 2021 (when it was 4.1%) although the year-on-year rate is down from December 2021 when it was 50.9%. The steepest monthly price increases in January were in communication (7.5%) and restaurants and hotels (5.7%). The two categories with the lowest monthly inflation were housing, water, gas & other fuel (1.8%) and education (0.8%). A survey of market analysts conducted by the central bank (BCRA), published last month, predicted that annual inflation would total 54.8% in 2022.
