BRAZIL: Bolsonaro visits Putin in Russia

Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro embarked on an international trip on 14 February. Bolsonaro visited Russia, where he was welcomed by his peer Vladimir Putin on 16 February, and then Hungary, where he met Prime Minister Viktor Orbán shortly before we went to press on 17 February. The decision to maintain the trip despite escalating global tensions over fears that Russia might invade Ukraine raised more than a few eyebrows, as well as questions as to what Bolsonaro had to gain from rubbing shoulders with the Russian strongman at such a delicate juncture in international geopolitics.
