BRAZIL: Environmentalists despair as legislation advances

For Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro, environmental considerations have always been secondary to the need to develop the country. In the case of the Amazon, this means that Bolsonaro has consistently spoken out in favour of developing commercial activities in the rainforest, such as agriculture and mining, to the detriment of environmental protection efforts. In the past week, legislation has been passed which gives an institutional framework to parts of Bolsonaro’s anti-environmental rhetoric and benefits core members of his support base, such as the agribusiness sector and illegal miners. Environmentalists are appalled, but unsurprised.
