In brief: Repsol CEO tallies cost of Peru oil spill clean-up

*The CEO of Spanish energy giant Repsol Josu Jon Imaz has put the clean-up and remediation costs of the major oil spill that devastated an area of coast north of Lima at around US$65m, a figure which he said could increase in coming weeks, according to international media reports citing a conference call he held with analysts. Previously described by President Pedro Castillo as “one of the worst cases of ecocide that has taken place on our coasts”, the spill was triggered by abnormally large waves which resulted from the 14 January eruption of a submarine volcano off the coast of Tonga, some 11,000km away.
