In brief: US restarts Mexican avocado imports
*The US agriculture department’s (USDA) animal and plant health inspection service (Aphis) has announced the restart of its avocado inspection programme in Mexico’s Michoacán state, meaning avocado exports from Mexico to the US can resume. The US halted imports after an Aphis official received a threatening phone call while carrying out inspection work in Uruapan city, Michoacán. Following talks between Aphis, the US embassy in Mexico, Mexico’s national service for agrifood health, safety and quality (Senasica) and the association of avocado producers and packers in Mexico (Apeam), additional safety measures have been implemented to enhance safety for Aphis inspectors in Mexico. Aphis stated that the US imported 1.2m tonnes (t) of avocado in 2021, with 1.1m t (89%) coming from Mexico.
