ECUADOR: Lasso denies interfering in CPCCS

Ecuador’s President Guillermo Lasso insisted on 22 February that his government “has absolutely not interfered” in the leadership of the Consejo de Participación Ciudadana y Control Social (CPCCS), the autonomous body tasked with senior judicial and regulatory appointments and the oversight of public funds. His comments followed the removal of CPCCS president Sofía Almeida in an internal putsch on 9 February. Almeida has alleged “external interference” in the institution, which Lasso has previously indicated that he would seek to dismantle [WR-21-16].
