Ramiro Villavicencio, has announced that mining exports in 2021 totalled US$5.90bn – a 91% increase on 2020, when global demand for minerals slumped following the onset of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Total output (including non-exported minerals) reached US$6.29bn. Mining royalties received by departments were up 78% on 2020 to total US$230.93m, with Potosí, La Paz, and Oruro departments earning the most. Villavicencio expressed optimism that the mining sector would continue to grow in the coming years, highlighting plans to develop a zinc refining plant in Oruro department which he said is expected to be operational in 2024.
