In brief: Panama’s private sector urges better reactivation measures

* Panama’s chamber of commerce, industry and agriculture (CCIAP) has warned that the country’s economic recovery from the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic has not been equal for all sectors or regions. Citing forecasts that GDP grew by 13.8% in 2021, the CCIAP said that growth has been driven mainly by sectors such as logistics, transport, activities related to the Panama Canal, and copper mining, highlighting that the main sectors which create employment – trade, construction, tourism and associated activities – remain affected by the pandemic-induced slowdown. It urged the government led by President Laurentino Cortizo to carry out measures to address these concerns.
