In brief: Chile’s economic activity starts to slow

* Chile’s central bank (BCCh) has released new figures showing that the monthly index of economic activity (Imacec), which serves as a proxy for GDP, increased 9.0% year-on-year in January 2022 – the first time in nine months that double-digit growth had not been posted. Chile’s Finance Minister Rodrigo Cerda was cited by the media as saying that the growth is still “historically high” but gradually has been showing signs of moderation. In monthly terms, Chile’s Imacec declined 1.0% in January compared with the previous month.
