In brief: Remittances to Nicaragua rise

* Nicaragua’s central bank (BCN) has released new figures which show that remittances to Nicaragua totalled US$194.7m in January 2022, up 22.5% on the same month in 2021. The main sources of remittances were the US, which accounted for 67.6% of the total, followed by Spain (12.4%), Costa Rica (11.7%), Panama (2.7%), and Canada (1.2%). Remittances to Nicaragua reached a record US$2.15bn in 2021, up from US$1.85bn in 2020, a previous record.
