COLOMBIA: Arauca gripped by guerrilla-on-guerrilla violence

Colombia’s eastern department of Arauca saw in the new year with its “most violent day in ten years,” in the words of departmental human rights ombudsman Juan Carlos Villate. In an act of guerrilla-on-guerrilla violence, at least 27 people were murdered and over 50 abducted on 2 January with the authorities attributing the killings to surging tensions between the Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN) guerrilla group and dissident factions of the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc). According to Defence Minister Diego Molano Aponte, by 12 February those tensions had caused the deaths of at least 86 people in Arauca since the start of 2022.
