Less than three weeks after the now former president Juan Orlando Hernández (2014-2022) and his Partido Nacional (PN) government left office, replaced by President Xiomara Castro and her leftist Partido Libertad y Refundación (Libre), Hernández was arrested in line with a US request for his extradition on drug-trafficking and weapons charges. His arrest follows various allegations by US prosecutors of ties to drug traffickers [SSR-21-04] (his own brother Juan Antonio was convicted in October 2019 in the US on charges including drug trafficking). There are hopes that Hernández’s arrest could mark a turning point in a country which has seen a major backsliding in anti-impunity efforts in recent years.
