In brief: PetroTal warns oil production threatened by protests in Peru

*Canadian-headquartered oil company PetroTal has announced that social unrest has forced it to scale back operations at the Block 95 oilfield in Peru’s Amazonian Loreto region. In a statement, PetroTal said that a river blockade by the local indigenous organisation Asociación Indígena de Desarrollo y Conservación del Bajo Puinahua (Aidecobap) had forced the company to slash its production to approximately 4,000 barrels per day (bpd), down from 20,000bpd in February. PetroTal called on the government led by President Pedro Castillo to take “necessary and timely actions” to ensure fluvial access to the oilfield. Aidecobap is campaigning for increased economic benefits for local residents from PetroTal’s operations, and has accused the local government of persecuting its activists.
