In brief: Argentina’s industry and construction decline

*Argentina’s national statistics institute (Indec) has released its latest figures on industrial manufacturing and construction, which show that both activities declined in January 2022 in monthly and year-on-year terms. The industrial manufacturing index was down 0.3% in January 2022 compared with January 2021, the first year-on-year decline of the last 12 months, and down 5.5% on the previous month. A local think tank Fundación de Investigaciones Económicas Latinoamericanas (FIEL) said last month that the performance of the industrial sector had been affected by absenteeism due to a wave of coronavirus (Covid-19) cases stemming from the omicron variant. Meanwhile the construction index was down 5.0% in January 2022 compared with January 2021 and down 3.9% on the previous month – the first monthly decline of the last 12 months.
