PARAGUAY: Drug operation claims congressional scalp

Juan Carlos Ozorio has resigned his seat in the lower chamber of Paraguay’s congress after evidence emerged of his links to the Brazilian drug-trafficking organisation Comando Vermelho (CV) in line with a major counter-narcotics operation being conducted by the national anti-drugs agency Senad. Ozorio, a member of Colorado Añetete, the faction of the ruling Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC) loyal to President Mario Abdo Benítez, was promptly placed under preventive detention. Ozorio’s downfall is embarrassing for Abdo Benítez, who was recently compelled to fire his interior minister, Arnaldo Giuzzio, over drug links [WR-22-08], but his government will maintain that it demonstrates its commitment to combat corruption and organised crime at all levels.
