The Dominican Republic’s President Luis Abinader delivered a national broadcast on 7 March to provide reassurance to the public that his government is taking steps to mitigate the fallout of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. There is widespread concern that the majority of countries in Central America and the Caribbean will struggle to contain inflation as a result of a surge in oil prices and food prices, driving up living costs. Abinader promised to subsidise fuel and public transport fares, as well as remove all tariffs on imported goods in the basic food basket.
