* The leader of Mexico’s opposition Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) in the lower chamber of congress, Rubén Moreira, has announced that the vote on President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s proposed electricity reform has been postponed, given that a consensus between political parties had not yet been reached on the matter. In a press conference, Moreira said the postponement would last for “however long may be necessary” to reach agreements on the modifications that need to be made to the reform. This follows weeks of debate in congress on the controversial reform, which would benefit the state-owned electricity firm Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) at the expense of private renewable energy companies. The reform has stalled in the lower chamber of congress since October 2021, as the ruling Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) party and its allies from the Partido del Trabajo (PT) and Partido Verde Ecologista de México (PVEM) only control 280 seats in the 500-seat lower chamber, 53 seats short of the two-thirds majority required to approve the reform.
