In brief: Canada to buy Brazilian beef and pork

* Brazil’s agriculture minister, Tereza Cristina da Costa Dias, has announced that Canada has authorised the import of raw pork and beef from Brazil. Imports of unprocessed pork and beef had previously been blocked over health concerns. “Great news for our agro-sector”, da Costa Dias, who is in Canada to meet with potash producers, tweeted. According to the Brazilian government, the country’s agriculture & livestock sector has now gained access to more than 200 new foreign markets since the start of Jair Bolsonaro’s presidency. The opening of the Canadian market for raw pork and beef could add US$150m to Brazilian exports per year, according to the agriculture ministry, considering that Canada has no import tax for pork imports.
