In brief: US rules out lifting oil sanctions on Venezuela ‘at this time’

* White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki has said that the US is not considering lifting oil sanctions on Venezuela “at this time”, amid speculation over a potential rapprochement with Venezuela President Nicolás Maduro following a trip by a high-level US delegation to Caracas on 5 March. Psaki said that the easing of sanctions is not currently an “active conversation” in President Joe Biden’s administration. Her comments followed a report by Reuters yesterday which claimed that US oil giant Chevron is preparing to take operational control of its joint ventures in Venezuela if the US lifts sanctions. Chevron holds a shared stake in four Venezuelan oil projects, alongside Venezuela’s state-owned oil company Petróleos de Venezuela (Pdvsa).
