A local court has ordered the arrest of El Salvador’s former president Alfredo Cristiani (1989-1994) of the right-wing Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena) and 12 others in relation to the 1989 massacre of six Jesuit priests by an elite army unit – one of the worst atrocities to take place during the 1980-1992 civil war. The arrest warrants, which were made public on 11 March, follow the announcement earlier this year by the supreme court’s constitutional chamber (SC) that it was re-opening the case [WR-22-02], a move which continues to meet with scepticism from some who fear that President Nayib Bukele and his ruling Nuevas Ideas (NI) are exploiting it for political gain.End of preview - This article contains approximately 648 words.
