MEXICO: European Parliament receives López Obrador’s wrath

When European Parliament members (MEPs) voted in favour of a resolution condemning the killing of journalists and human rights defenders (HRDs) in Mexico, it was unlikely they foresaw the reaction it would provoke. In response, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has accused MEPs of being corrupt and hypocritical, having a “colonialist mentality”, and of waging a soft coup against his government. In the furore, the troubles facing journalists and HRDs appear to have taken a back seat.
