Petro cements pole position as congress shifts slightly leftwards

Gustavo Petro roared to victory in the primary elections for his left-wing Pacto Histórico coalition on 13 March. This was no great surprise but the strong showing of his coalition in the concurrent congressional elections was. It suggests that Petro is in a good position to go one better than in 2018 when he finished second to Iván Duque. Duque’s underwhelming performance as president means that for the first time since 2002, Uribismo, the right-wing political movement aligned with former president Álvaro Uribe (2002-2010), is on the retreat and will struggle to prevent Petro from becoming Colombia’s first-ever leftist head of state.
