* Ecuador’s government, led by President Guillermo Lasso, has launched a dialogue process with the country’s umbrella trade union, the Frente Unitario de Trabajadores (FUT), to discuss its planned labour reform. The government’s labour reform proposals have proved controversial, with critics arguing that they would flexibilise labour regulations to the detriment of workers. A first attempt to pass the reform by fusing it to the government’s tax reform failed in September when the national assembly’s administrative council (CAL) ruled that the merging of the two bills was unconstitutional. Following the first meeting between the government and the FUT on 17 March, Labour Minister Patricio Donoso said that the parties had established an agenda for future discussions, and that “next week the reform bill will be sent to the FUT and in 15 days we’ll have another meeting to discuss the points that need strengthening and reformulating.”
