In brief: Paraguay’s fuel protests take new turn

* Paraguay’s interior minister, Federico González, has announced that the government will break up roadblocks erected by truckers, taxi drivers, and motorcycle delivery drivers, who have been protesting about high fuel prices all week. Several highways across the country have been blocked, especially the one linking Asunción to border crossings with Argentina and Brazil. González said the government remained open to dialogue but detected “a very strong political element” behind the protests. He said the protesters demanded one thing and upon receiving it immediately demanded more. The government reduced the price of Type III diesel and 93 octane petrol by G500 (US$0.072) per litre on 17 March but this fell some way short of the initial demand made by protest leaders of G1,500 per litre.
