In brief: Chile posts solid growth in 2021

* Chile’s central bank (BCCh) has released new figures which show Chile’s GDP grew 11.7% in 2021, up from the 5.8% contraction registered in 2020 due to the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19). According to the BCCh, this growth reflected the gradual opening of the economy following measures taken to stem the spread of Covid-19 and better adaptation of households and companies to the sanitary situation over the year. The BCCh also observed an increase in domestic demand explained in part by economic support measures to households and companies and the partial withdrawals of pension funds. The same figures show Chile’s GDP grew 12.0% year-on-year in the final quarter of 2021, down from 17.2% in the third quarter and 18.9% in the second, while in the first quarter of 2021 GDP growth was 0.0%.
