In brief: López Obrador says Ukraine war will boost investment in Mexico

*Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has said that investment in Mexico will increase due to the war in Ukraine. “With this new economic crisis resulting from the war, Mexico has become, if not the first, then the second, third country with the most investment opportunities in the world,” said López Obrador, speaking at the inauguration of the new Felipe Ángeles international airport (AIFA) near Mexico City (CDMX). López Obrador cited an unnamed “financial report on Russia” as the basis for his assertions, that showed that there had been a “shift” in the countries that were considered as emerging economies and favourable for investment, with Mexico now situated among the most attractive for investors. López Obrador said this would lead to “more investment, more growth, more employment and therefore complete reactivation of commercial and cargo aviation”. López Obrador has previously stated that the conflict will not increase fuel and energy prices in Mexico, as he plans to use extra government revenue from oil exports to subsidise the price of gasoline and diesel for Mexican consumers.
