In brief: Cuba’s Díaz-Canel optimistic on tourism

*Cuba’s President Miguel Díaz-Canel has said that he expects that Cuba will receive over 2.5m tourists in 2022. According to figures presented last month by Cuba’s national statistics institute (ONEI) the number of tourists visiting Cuba totalled 573,944 in 2021, just 39.8% of the total registered in the same period of 2020. The decline reflects the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Díaz-Canel made his comments at an annual meeting of the tourism (Mintur) ministry.
