In brief: Brazil tourism still behind pre-pandemic levels

* The Federação do Comércio de Bens, Serviços e Turismo do Estado de São Paulo (FecomercioSP), a business association, has released new data which shows that Brazil’s tourism sector generated R$15.3bn (US$3.11bn) in revenue in January this year. This represents a 22.9% increase on January 2021 levels, largely driven by the strong recovery of the air travel sector. According to FecomercioSP, 8m travellers transited through Brazil’s airports in January – up 22.9% year-on-year – while the activity of food and accommodation services grew 14.7% year-on-year. However, Brazil’s tourism sector is yet to recoup the losses incurred by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic; despite the year-on-year growth, air travel was still 13.6% below January 2020 levels, while food and accommodation was 19.2% below pre-pandemic levels.
