In brief: Mexico’s Jalisco state to export avocados to US this year

* Mexico’s agriculture and rural development ministry (Sader) has announced that work is underway to begin exporting avocados from the state of Jalisco to the US this year. According to Sader, Jalisco exports more than 113,000 tonnes (t) of avocados a year to 30 countries. In a statement, Agriculture Minister Victor Villalobos Arámbula said the export of avocados from Jalisco to the US represented “a great opportunity to consolidate Mexico as the main provider of the best fruit in the world”. His statement followed a meeting between federal and state government representatives with producers from Jalisco, with the objective of beginning activities outlined in an operational workplan that Sader signed with the US in December 2021 for the export of Jalisco avocados. At the time, Sader had said it hoped the plan would pave the way for avocado exports from the states Nayarit and Estado de México (Edomex) too which, together with Jalisco, are the main avocado-producing states in Mexico after Michoacán, the only state which currently exports avocados to the US. The US temporarily suspended avocado imports from Michoacán in February, citing security reasons. Imports were swiftly reinstated following talks with the US embassy in Mexico, Mexico’s national service for agrifood health, safety and quality (Senasica) and the association of avocado producers and packers in Mexico (Apeam).
