In brief: Brazil’s Guedes reaffirms commitment to OECD

* Brazil’s Economy Minister Paulo Guedes has met with representatives of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), notably OECD secretary general Mathias Cormann, to reaffirm Brazil’s commitment to the organisation’s values and instruments. Brazil began formal discussions to join the OECD, a club of mostly rich countries, in January this year. The Brazilian government insists that the country has made ample progress on adhering to the OECD’s normative instruments, although observers say that progress is still needed in some areas, notably on tax regulation and on the environment and human rights. Guedes met Cormann in Paris, France, as part of a trip which focuses on Brazil’s efforts to align itself with the requirements for OECD membership. After Paris, Guedes will travel to Spain, where he will meet business representatives and Spain’s economy minister, Nadia Calviño.
