Mexico’s attorney general faces calls to go after adverse ruling

Mexico’s attorney general, Alejandro Gertz Manero, received a chastening setback this week when the supreme court (SCJN) ruled unanimously that his attempts to prosecute his sister-in-law and her daughter, who he held responsible for the death of his brother, were unconstitutional. The SCJN ruling means that Gertz, who is by extension guilty of misuse of power, should be on borrowed time. But Gertz is a close ally of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who has previously stood by officials who have demonstrated loyalty despite their shortcomings.
