Has Nicaragua reached a tipping point?

Nicaragua’s (now former) ambassador to the Organization of American States (OAS), Arturo McFields, has delivered a blistering attack on the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) government led by President Daniel Ortega. Branding it a dictatorship, McFields painted a dismal picture of the current human rights and democracy situation in the country, echoing widespread condemnation of the government which has intensified since the November 2021 election and is currently focused on the plight of political prisoners there. The first top government official to publicly defect since 2019, McFields warned Ortega that people inside the government have had enough: another prominent Orteguista spoke out days later. But Ortega has clung on to power tenaciously since 2007 and he will seek to reinforce the dam wall before the trickle becomes a flood.
