PERU: Castillo acquitted in impeachment vote

The pressure on Peru’s President Pedro Castillo eased somewhat on 28 March, after he comfortably survived an impeachment trial in congress. Whilst the odds had been slightly in Castillo’s favour, the 32-vote margin by which he avoided impeachment was larger than expected. Centrist parties, which just two weeks ago had seemed to be turning on Castillo, granted him another chance. They may not be so merciful should Castillo need to face down a third impeachment motion, the groundwork for which the far-right Renovación Popular (RP) has indicated it is already laying.
