URUGUAY: Lacalle Pou wins key battle

Uruguay’s President Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou won a narrow but decisive victory over the main opposition Frente Amplio (FA) coalition in a national referendum on 27 March. Voters opted to preserve his government’s gargantuan Ley de Urgente Consideración (LUC) intact rather than repeal nearly a third of its 476 articles. It is a testament to the performance of Lacalle Pou’s government that it has not lost support as he only took office with a razor-thin majority in March 2020. The victory could define Lacalle Pou’s presidency as he made no secret of the fact that the LUC was his flagship reform. He is now seeking to deepen reforms on a number of fronts.
