BRAZIL: Presidential race picks up pace

Brazil is currently in the pre-campaign period ahead of the country’s 2 October general election – and will remain so until 16 August, the date candidates are allowed to launch their campaigns formally and start asking for votes. The electoral atmosphere has, nonetheless, heated up in the past week or so, with President Jair Bolsonaro all but launching his candidacy at a political event on 27 March, a few days after veteran politician Geraldo Alckmin fell just short of confirming that he will be the running mate of former president Lula da Silva (2003-2011).
