PANAMA: Electoral court raises eyebrows with Martinelli ruling

Panama’s electoral court (TE) has issued a ruling which shields from prosecution former president Ricardo Martinelli (Cambio Democrático, 2009-2014), who is currently being investigated in relation to various cases. The TE’s decision, which would seem to remove an obstacle to a potential 2024 presidential bid by Martinelli, who has made little secret of his intention of running again for his new party, Realizando Metas (RM), has reignited criticism of Panama’s institutions.
