Booming coca cultivation in Peru and Colombia draws US concern

The US Department of State’s latest International Narcotics Control Strategy Report (INCSR), published 1 March, outlined major backsliding in coca eradication in Colombia and Peru in 2020. In Colombia, cultivation was at its highest level on record, while Peru saw production leap by over 20%. Whilst the disruption caused by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic is undoubtably partly to blame for the increase, the INCSR also questioned the absence of any eradication in Peru’s main centre of coca cultivation, the Apurímac, Ene, and Mantaro rivers valley (Vraem).
