BRAZIL: The battle with Telegram

As Brazil’s October general election approaches, authorities are particularly preoccupied with how to limit the spread of fake news and the damage it causes to the political debate and quality of democracy. In February, supreme court justice Edson Fachin – who has since taken over the presidency of the supreme electoral court (TSE) – warned that Brazil faces “the biggest test for its democratic institutions” this year. One social media platform is considered to pose significant risks: the Russian-founded and Dubai-based messaging app Telegram.
