MEXICO: Outrage as school benefits programme axed

The cancellation of an educational programme that benefited underprivileged students in Mexico has caused uproar among children’s rights groups, educational organisations and the political opposition. In March, the parties making up the tripartite Va por México opposition alliance announced they were establishing a working group in congress to seek the return of the Programa Escuelas de Tiempo Completo (PETC), which provided longer school days and free school meals to some 3.6m children and teenagers in marginalised areas of the country.
