NICARAGUA: Convictions of political prisoners cause outcry

On 14 March the European Union (EU) became the latest institution to call on the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) government led by President Daniel Ortega to immediately release all political prisoners and annul all legal proceedings against them. The EU’s call follows similar calls by the Organization of American States (OAS), United Nations (UN), and US in response to the trials and convictions of political prisoners which began in February, an issue which is serving as the latest source of international condemnation of Ortega and his government, whose victory in the November 2021 general election was widely condemned as a ‘sham’.
