In brief: Mexico’s finance ministry lowers 2022 growth forecast

*Mexico’s finance ministry (SHCP) has revised down its forecast for economic growth in 2022 from 4.1% to 3.4%. In a statement, the SHCP said the reason for the adjustment was related to the continuing impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic on the imbalance of supply and demand, and the escalating geopolitical conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The SHCP said the government still expected to meet its fiscal targets for the year, “despite the uncertainty observed in the external environment”. In a survey carried out by Mexico’s central bank (Banxico) in March, private sector economists also revised down 2022 GDP growth forecasts for Mexico, from 2.04% to 1.76%.
