In brief: Brazil sees record exports in March

* Brazil’s economy ministry has released the latest figures on trade, which show that the country recorded a US$7.38bn trade surplus in March, a 19.3% increase on the March 2021 trade surplus and a record figure for the month. Exports totalled US$29.09bn – a record for any month since the historical series began – while imports grew 27.1% year-on-year to US$21.71bn. Herlon Brandão, deputy secretary for foreign trade intelligence and statistics, notes that the record figure for exports is due to a small 1.8% increase in volume and a 17.2% increase in the price of products sold by Brazil. The country’s agribusiness exports surged 36.8% year-on-year in March to US$8.17bn, while manufacturing exports expanded 35.2% to US$14.47bn. In the first quarter of 2022, Brazil posted a US$11.31bn trade surplus.
