In brief: Panama to increase budget transparency

* Panama’s finance minister, Héctor Alexander, has announced a new ‘open budget’ initiative, which aims to promote transparency and citizen participation in national budgeting. The open budget will be a simplified version of the national budget, which Alexander said would educate citizens on how the budget is drafted, what the country’s main sources of income are, and how funds are allocated. “The public budgeting process in Panama is carried out, to a large extent, with little participation from civil society and isn’t always understandable for common citizens,” he said, adding that the open budget “aims to provide more space for citizen participation”.
