In brief: Uruguay’s Bustillo meets Blinken for trade discussions

* US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has met with Uruguay’s Foreign Minister Francisco Bustillo in Washington to discuss bilateral trade links and the impact of Russia’s war against Ukraine on the global food supply chain. In a joint statement, Blinken and Bustillo affirmed their mutual aim of successfully concluding ongoing negotiations to update the US-Uruguay Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA). They said that revisions to the TIFA are expected to “deepen commercial ties, improve the investment climate, and enhance opportunities for small businesses”. Emphasising the “shared values” between the US and Uruguay, Blinken and Bustillo also confirmed that they will be launching an annual bilateral inter-ministerial dialogue to coordinate on priority areas such as economic, commercial, investment, and technology issues.
