ECUADOR: China FTA negotiations get the green light

Ecuador’s President Guillermo Lasso moved a step closer towards his goal of a free trade agreement (FTA) with China on 7 April, when the autonomous foreign trade committee (Comex) gave his administration the go-ahead to commence negotiations. Securing an FTA that balances the conflicting interests of local producers, some of whom face being undercut by Chinese competitors, and persuading the opposition-controlled national assembly to ratify the agreement, will not be easy.
